Law School of Dalian Maritime University was first established in 1998 when the former Market Economic Law School merged with International Maritime Major of Transportation Management College. DMU Law School was authorized to confer doctoral degree of International Law in 1998, and its post-doctoral programme kicked off in 2009, and was permitted first-level discipline of law in 2010, which top the 35 national leading doctoral disciplines.
Law School is equipped with a multi-disciplinary and compound faculty that integrating of theory and practice. The faculty emphasizes quality teaching and student-based learning, and focus on both theoretical and practical education. Now, DMU Law School has 17 professors, 15 associate professors and 19 lecturers, of who 45 have Ph.D. and Ph.D. candidate, 21 of whom have earned Ph.D. overseas and have studied foundry abroad. Meanwhile, there is one Vice Chairman of China Maritime Law Association (CMLA), one nominating committee member of Comite Maritime International (CMI), two specialists from Legal Expert Consultation Committee of Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, three candidates of “National Top Ten Youth Jurist”, one outstanding teacher in Liaoning Province and another three experts of “First Young and Mid-career Extraordinary Jurist in Liaoning Province”. In addition, foreign experts are engaged to teach all year around in Law School.
Law School is very proud of its leading Maritime Law and International Law research institutes. Law School has already formed complete talents’ training system including undergraduates, postgraduates, professional degree graduates, especially in maritime law discipline, which ranks national highest law schools and research institutions due to complete teaching system, comprehensive discipline orientation and abundant academic achievements. Law major is graded as one of the Liaoning Provincial Model Programme and ranks in national level as feature major. International Law with Civil Law and Commercial Law are the provincial level key disciplines. Furthermore, the international maritime law research center is Liaoning’s only law in character focus on Humanities and Social Sciences research base. Maritime law and international trade law are quality courses of Liaoning, the subject of civil and commercial law was named Liaoning excellent teaching team, etc. Currently, DMU Law School is home to 804 undergraduates, 224 Master of Laws postgraduates and 230 Juris Master postgraduates, 163 doctoral candidates including foreign degree candidates.
The school attaches great importance to the combination of theory and practice, and actively participates in international and domestic legislation process. It has presided over and participated in the drafting of “Maritime Code of the PRC”, “Maritime Procedure Law of the PRC” and other laws etc. Law School professors were as principal member of the Chinese delegation that participated in working out international maritime legislation more than once. It has also presided over and completed numbers of national and provincial projects of the National Social Science Fund Programme, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Transport, etc, in which dozens of innovations won national and provincial-level incentives. For the moment our Law School is doing more than 50 projects at the National Social Science Fund Programme, provincial and ministerial-level and large state-owned enterprises technology advisory programmes. Law School has already successively published many legal writings, teaching materials, Nationally Planned Textbook for “Tenth Five – Year Plan” and Recommended Textbool for postgraduates, such as “New Maritime Law”, “Admiralty Law”, “Introduction of Private International Law” that were awarded the second prize of the National Outstanding Teaching Materials.
The School emphasizes international exposure, and has established sustained and steady academic exchange and joint-training cooperation relationship with dozens of foreign universities, such as International Management Institute of New York University, Swansea University, University of Southampton, University of Nottingham, Tulane University, Korea University, Waseda University, Maastricht University, University of Hong Kong, etc. Students are encouraged to participate in various international mooting programs and exchange programs.
The School possesses a favorable teaching and research condition. The Law School building is equipped with completed facilities staff room, graduate student study room, meeting rooms, activity rooms, and a reference room with more than 50-thousand volumes of books and 100 kinds of academic journals. It has a moot court with state-of-the art equipment.
